Marius Oberholster Hey! I'm having an incredible learning experience, not only learning how Blender works (yes, still learning), but also about Open-Source and the incredible software available. Stick around!

Blender Guru Competition - Theme: Saying Goodbye - Results

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Thursday, March 22, 2012
What a looooong wait for the results. When HE had and helped me make the entry, it only took a short time to finish and it was submitted. So for just over a month I was waiting to see what would happen with it.

Anyway, the competition went on and I was afraid of the result; what people would think of it, since it's not a very rosy theme. It came out well and we'll see what people think of it (though no comments were made about it so far on the results page on Blender Guru dot com).

I learned a few new skills during this project. One of which is rigging and another is how to fake a large scale fire using procedural textures. I may just cover it in the tutorial to come, but not making any promises (^^,)

Here is the entry:

Description:

This is the text I sent along when I submitted my entry:

"A little bit about the image:
From the get-go you can obviously see it has to do with eternal
destination. One of the worst possible goodbyes would have to be a goodbye
like this. Having to do that with such an eternal ramification and the sad
part is that when you or I leave (whenever HE determines), we do say
goodbye to people who are gonna make it and a lot more who aren't. This
image is a metaphor for such a moment, not scriptural for what happens
after death. An eternal goodbye.

How the idea came about:

I heard that the competition was on on Wednesday and I wondered what could
I possibly do and I prayed and asked what HE would have me do and wasn't
long and this came to mind in various forms, but what stood out was the
intense clarity in composition and modeling and I couldn't match it 100%
(my PC is quite slow), but this is by far one of the closest images to the
inspiration received.

The making:
I was not jazzed about making this, because immediately people will
consider this preaching and condemnation, which it's not. It's about
believers being in the world and we will have friends that aren't
believers, that will refuse HIM and will face the consequences... This is
about that desperation for people to make it and to go to Heaven.
Finally HE got HIS way and I started on the project last night and worked
on it almost all day today (GMT+2).
The aim in making was simple modeling and tricks to do what my PC
can't handle in the
simulators. In addition, this was also my first real attempt and victory in
rigging (no vertex groups were used, though made; extremely extremely basic
rigging)

Hope you like it!

All the best for the judging!!"

And here is the outcome
I didn't win. It wasn't the aim to. I was this time more focused on doing what I truly believed HE wanted me to, so it's more about a warning-type message than it is about winning. An honorable mention or being a finalist would've been cool though.

Hope you enjoyed this post and the image! Thanx for reading!

Thank YOU!!!
