About Me

Marius Oberholster Hey! I'm having an incredible learning experience, not only learning how Blender works (yes, still learning), but also about Open-Source and the incredible software available. Stick around!

Caves, how are they made

Hey all!

I watched and did (for a change) one of Andrew's tutorials yesterday and it was a blast. I struggle intensely in getting the crystal how I wanted, but through a lot of leading, it is how I want it and, I hope you give it a try as well. Naturally, I just finished a book on Procedural Textures, very appropriately named, Procedural textures, and so I was not about to download the textures. Instead, I did the whole thing, from displacement to color, etc, all procedural textures in Cycles.

Here is how my progress went:
 - When I started the tutorial, my cave's floor and walls, etc, were just not coming together. It was too rough, too uniform; no matter what I did, it just sucked, haha. Until, GOD inspired me to take down the glossy shader. I did and almost instantly, the texture worked, I had better variations on the floor and so on. The result was just fantastic and here it is:

- So I kept working and working and working and finally added the basic crystal (which I really struggled with), added some stalagmites and stalactites, entered some mist and did another progress render with the world turned off:

- Moving on, I could now add the mushrooms, the person at the mouth and the world + a little bit of compositing:

- I was fairly happy with this result, but the crystal was just too white, imo. I wanted it a whole lot bluer and so, went a bit further on the compositing to produce the final:

And that's it for this post!! :D

I hope you liked Andrew's tutorial and that you give this scene a try yourself!!

Thank YOU!!!!!!!
