Compositing - Glaring Reflections [TUTORIAL]

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Thursday, June 25, 2015 Under: Tutorials
Hey all!

I have a tutorial for you today!! This one is on glaring items that are in reflections, using the compositor and material index to isolate, glare and add them to the final image. I know this one you'll luv!

A little more info:
I seem to be making more video tutorials lately. I initially wanted to write it here as a QBT, but really felt lead to do it as a video tutorial on YouTube, so here it is. I was working on a scene where I had to make a room that has a mirror in it and some wall and ceiling lights and one of them reflected in a mirror and did not glare. It looked really off, so I went about looking for a solution and GOD lead me to isolate the mirror's material so I have the bright-spot in there and that worked so well! I'm sure it will work for your scene too!
In Blender Render, Blender does not recognize reflections as being anything other than the material and object that is there. In other words, there is no depth in the mirror. This means, no material index, so you have to work around it and it is more than possible and it's where this tutorial comes in! :D

As a fun part, I wrote a sea background sound for this tutorial (added the same for the previous tutorial). It's as if the recording process creates so many artifacts on the sound, that my voice alone sounds very low quality after removing the hissing and a few other noises. I've upped the sound quality already so I had to take a different step and that is to add the ocean :D. It's mainly for ambiance :). As usual, I used Anvil Studio for it and the original music at the start and end. For mixing I use Audacity and final video editing is in Blender.

May it bless you and know that GOD loves you!
