Marius Oberholster Hey! I'm having an incredible learning experience, not only learning how Blender works (yes, still learning), but also about Open-Source and the incredible software available. Stick around!

Eevee and the coming render

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Saturday, March 25, 2017 Under: News
Hey all!

Yesterday, there was a very very interesting blog post shared, concerning Blender's upcoming new realtime engine called Eevee. While the posts states that this is the nickname, I kinda like the sound of it. Kinda suits the idea, because to me it sounds quick and speedy, and fast, and prompt, haha, you get the point.

I read through it and I am super happy with what they are planning, to say the least. I was hoping that they would have it already done and functioning by now. While the PBR Branch was a very cool experiment and Clement put in a lot of effort, it was sadly not production ready (believe you me, I tried! hahaha). I am very glad he is on this project, because I saw the excellence with which he worked.

 - Offline Rendering
Anyway, one of the main features I'm looking forward to is the offline mode. While it's probably just me calling it that, it will certainly have an offline rendering feature to be able to generate really nice soft shadows and have it a bit more refined. My goal, of course, would be to use it as an offline renderer that is super fast and that seems to be a very clear goal based on the post.

Ideally, I was hoping that this would've been finished by the end of Esther 6, because I wanted the next ones to go much faster than 5 months per chapter (about half of which is animation, rendering and fixing and re-rendering, haha). I don't want to rush the process, but I do want to say that I am really really looking forward to it and I have heard that they will have a toon shader as well, so yey (if not with initial release, definitely later on)! hahaha.

 - To PBR or not to PBR
While still a very popular style at the moment, I do see more and more NPR coming on the scene, especially Anime, with more and more programs attempting to bring Anime to 3D. Ironically, I believe I'm being shown that the community will dictate the new look that it will gravitate to with 3D - whether it be more realistic or more extreme, we'll see. Interesting video by Mark Crilley on the progression of his general style in Manga:

Personally, PBR is not an interest of mine - at least not yet, because of the uncanny valley and that I have had a phase of portraiture. I really do luv the anime style a lot and I can't overestimate the impact the style has on it's viewers. When I was in kindergarden there was a series on TV called In The Beginning Bible Stories. It's an anime that made such an impact that I saw some episodes once and they stuck with me until this year or last year when I went to look up the show. Anime is an extremely powerful medium and there's a reason it has the impact and subculture that it has.

Who knows, maybe the new more 3D anime will have a more PBR feel to it (like Disney's big eyes translated into Pixar movies, like Bolt and Wall-E or Superbook's new 3D style). I personally prefer 2D-3D (such as below). The smoothness is something to get used to, but the stiff animation can still be used as an expressive element. It really does fit in 3D amazingly well!

Here is an example:

I'm not recommending the show, because I do disagree with the premise (sorcery), but I am sharing it as an example of what 3D anime can look like if done well, without trying to cram 3D into a 2D box.

If PBR is something you excel in, you know there will always be a space for you in live action movies and live post processing, but I am suggesting that everyone be open to trying both - NPR and PBR.

Huge thanx to all the developers and community who have part in the new engine! It is going to be awesome!!!

Thank YOU LORD!!
I know this tool will be used in amazing ways to further YOUR Kingdom work!
Thank YOU!

Just 'cause:

Biggest thanx to GOD for helping me with this. Without HIM, none of this would be possible! :D
