About Me

Marius Oberholster Hey! I'm having an incredible learning experience, not only learning how Blender works (yes, still learning), but also about Open-Source and the incredible software available. Stick around!

Flag animation is successful!!!

Hey all!

Yesterday I told you guys that I wanted to include the animation part in the flag tutorial. As you can imagine, a modeled flag looks great, but is pretty useless if you can't use it in a video, so I really really felt that HE insisted I find a way to animate it successfully.

While messing around with it over the last few days while working on this, I tried a few methods, all of which sucked and only Sunday morning did HE show me how to do it in a way that would look good.
So, after applying that method and fine tuning it, I found a result I am mostly happy with at full speed. You can download and watch it.
Remember, this is purely procedural textures and internal Blender features.
No cloth sims were used or harmed in the making of this animation, lol.

Here is a frame from the animation:

I added some compositing effects to it, to give it a bit more life and I like the way it came out. As usual, left click to view the full-res in a new tab.

I still very much want to fine tune it (and include the ropes, since I am yet to see wireless flags, lol) and make it as realistic as possible (the smaller wrinkles), but we'll see what HE shows me as the solution.

Hope you like it so far!!

Thank YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!
