Marius Oberholster Hey! I'm having an incredible learning experience, not only learning how Blender works (yes, still learning), but also about Open-Source and the incredible software available. Stick around!

Lip-syncing in Blender

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 Under: Tutorials
Hey all!

This is the big one that GOD wanted me to make shortly after the Make Human to Anime one. Unfortunately, I didn't do it in a timely fashion, and I am hugely grateful for the help HE gave on the others, but I am happy to say it's here and now and done!

(Click to view on YouTube - opens in a new tab or window depending on browser)

I am very happy with this video for a few reasons. The biggest of which is that this one kinda forms part two and three of the Make Human to Anime tutorial, by featuring how to make a male character and how to do lip syncing as well as some animation to make it really not stand out, haha. Sounds contrary, but you really don't want your audience gawking at the mouths of your characters. The mouth should only serve to ID who is actually speaking.

In this one, I cover quite a bit, so I made a guide that is interactive (or should be at least) in the description for YouTube and here it is too:
0:00:09 - Very short example:
I did read quite a bit too fast here. I think I was subconsciously rushing myself, because nr1 the KJV (1611, public domain) is very hard to read fluently and, nr2 reading all 66 books in the Bible does take a while and is quite draining on my voice. The lesson: Do it right the first time, then you don't have to redo it, hahaha.

0:00:17 - Make Human:
This is a very very basic male character that I run you through. Always bear in mind what you want your character to look like and function like when you use a third part modeller like Make Human. In this case, I did not have a specific character in mind, just a male character I could use for the tutorial, so he is very very basic in appearance. To really see how flexible Make Human is, use a sketch of one of your own original character and get as close to that as you can in Make Human, then take it to Blender and finish it. You will be amazed!

0:04:11 - Blender (Make Human to Anime > male character)
This is basically the same process as in the first tutorial, but I do run through the materials a bit. I do however explain a little bit about why I adjust what I do, ito the model, so you can see how to take it further. I also show you a bit on shape keys.

0:36:50 - Blender (lip-syncing prep)
Not to go into too much detail, but this part shows you how to get ready to add everything needed to begin the animation process for lip-syncing, including the shape keys.

0:41:20 - Audacity (animation sound file)
In order to animate the lip sync much faster than usual, we are going to bake audio to our jaw bone. In other words, the very file that your audience will hear will help you do part of the animation for you! Isn't that so cool!!! In this segment, I explain to you how to do it and even give you a hint on what you can do with it.

0:45:42 - Blender (lip-syncing animation)
The main part of the tutorial! Do that lip-sync! As you can tell by the length of this segment, it is not such a time-consuming process as most would like to make you believe it is. If you follow this method, it saves you lots of time. You do still need to do some animation though, but it's not nearly as much as you might think!

(When I saw our method differed so much, I was really relieved, because I did not want to come off as some copycat, because the morning I saw his, I wanted to upload mine and I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOO! hahaha).

Music: Original composition after watching a tutorial on how to write better melodies - much stronger than the previous ones, imo, haha. The tutorial said that every melody has a rhythm and when I applied it, just wow! Give it a try too if you write music!

Anyhow,  huge thanks to GOD for helping me with this. YOU have helped me put this together, helped me polish it and package it so others can learn these great techniques as well! Thank YOU so much for every app that has been made freely available. Without YOU, none of this would be possible! :D

Have a great one!!!

Thank YOU!!!!!!
