Mesh hair tutorials

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Thursday, January 21, 2016 Under: News
Hey all!

A while ago, I saw a tutorial by a guy named Alimayo Arango on modelling a character. Specifically, the way he modeled hair was of interest to me. This was a two part tutorial, but felt lead to watch the second part first and guess what it started with?! Yes, modelling mesh hair. This has been such a struggle for me, because I always wanted to try and model the hair as tubes, because that is essentially what they look like in 2D animations. I was so excited!! I'm first showing you the tutorial and then some work based on it:

The first piece I want to show you is this surfer volleyball player:

He was done for the MakeHuman competition "Playful". Which was fun, for sure! :D

The next tutorial was published yesterday and when I saw it, I had a feeling where he had gotten the idea, hahaha, but first, the tutorial:

(Don't you just luv that look!!)

A while ago, after seeing the first tutorial in the post, part 2 of the character modelling tutorial, I had used the technique to model some characters hair for a special project and also the beard for a project I'm currently working on, called Esther 6. It's basically, for those who don't know, literally Esther chapter 6 from the Bible. It is a divine assignment GOD has given me and I'm doing it and oh snap is it hard, hahaha. Luving the challenge, because I learned a lot from it, for sure!

Anyway, in Esther, there is a man named Mordecai. He is her cousin and is much older than her and when her parents passed away, he took her in and raised her as his own. Not unheard of ito age gap. I have two cousins I can think of right now that are a generation older than me. I don't know why, but I felt GOD wanted me to give him gray hair (white in anime) and to make him a bit further than a generation older and he has to have a beard and this method is what HE chose and below is what he looked like right after he got the beard:

(This was the image I sent him - early render, so forget the funny looking hair and that he has no visible body, haha.) Modeled with Make Human and anime'd in Blender
(Again, a wip render - see links below for the final)

I sent him a render of the beard to tell him that his method for modelling hair, also works great for beards (felt lead to do that, and now see why, haha). GOD used this to give him the idea to do a new tutorial, specifically on modelling mesh hair like this and the beard and it is stunning. Check it out!
