Marius Oberholster Hey! I'm having an incredible learning experience, not only learning how Blender works (yes, still learning), but also about Open-Source and the incredible software available. Stick around!

New 3D Tutorial

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 Under: Tutorials
Hey all,

Super excited to be sharing this with you today! The new 3D tutorial is finally up!!

Just to show you what it can do, I made a little reel:

You can get the tutorial here!

Remember that this is a speed method and far from perfect. It is strictly applied in the compositor and can produce a result in a matter of seconds (depending on your compositing complexity and resolution).

Origin of this method:
For a long time, I was being taught how to use procedural textures and through that, I learned that one image can distort another. So, I knew that there has to be a way to do this to produce another angle, while not having to render it from scratch.

Not giving it a shot of course, due to the complexity this kind of processing usually has. Anywho, GOD put it on my heart to write a book on procedural textures and that has been completed for a while now and should go on sale soon, but during the writing, HE told me to stop working on the book for a time and get a working method for 3D with a single render method. Now, I was in the middle of another tutorial and really not in the mood for it, but like George Washington Carver, you just get the push and you motor to find whatever it is you have been chosen to do. He was shown the working of a peanut, I was shown how to get 3D with a single render + Z-pass.

Let me explain a few things:
- I suck at math and I was given a simple formula to make the effect relative over percentages (same strength at 50% HD and 50% SD).
- 3D from 2D, even with a depthmap, requires extreme mathematical ability, something I don't posses and can barely even program.
- I don't have formal training in 3D techniques, nor was I in the position to finish my degree in digital visual arts. We only had one modelling demonstration and that was it; it was how to make a hammer (and that was on 3DSMax, not Blender).
- This technique has no specific render engine that is needed for it. If you have an image and a corresponding depth map, that's all that's needed basically.
- The speed is insanely fast (not realtime, but still tons faster than running two individual angles)

This method's working is to GOD's glory, not mine.
