Marius Oberholster Hey! I'm having an incredible learning experience, not only learning how Blender works (yes, still learning), but also about Open-Source and the incredible software available. Stick around!

New tutorial Smoke and fire

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Monday, October 7, 2019 Under: Tutorials
Hey all!

Update
It's so nice to be able to make another tutorial. I'm still working on the other video I talked about, but the reason it's taking so long is that it is fairly lengthy, but I have almost no footage for it, so I have to make all sorts of animations to fill in the time - it's more about the audio, so consider most of what you will see in it filler footage, lol.

Anyway, moving on.

New tutorial
I really wanted to make a tutorial and felt led to, but I had no idea what and I felt the LORD say go to the spreadsheet (I have a spreadsheet filled with ideas and suggestions) and I was scrolling through it and this was the one that fit.
After I recorded it, I remembered the whole Kyoani incident and I didn't want to make the video, because I don't want it to be taken as offensive, because it's not - life has to go on and fire is a large part of anime and life in general. It's still a shocking event, and I do hope that those who suffer from what appears to be some level of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) find peace and focus on the fact that they survived, not that they were attacked... That there is a community of fans behind them all around the world...

So, today we get another fire tutorial - I have had a few in the series, but there are a few more I would luv to make, but for some reason the time isn't right for them just yet.

I covered smoke in one of the vlogs for Exodus - which often had mini tutorials for the first batch of videos, but I really wanted to do a full tutorial and this is that.

So without further ado:

GOD is so great!!

So the way this method came about is not new. I've used this method in the past, but felt the LORD lead me a little differently ito the modelling (leaving it open at the top) and to stretch the flames as far as possible and it just worked.

There are three things that didn't work for me with this tutorial and they are on me:
 - I had to play the result back at half speed, because I worked at 24fps and AVSync was not selected. This meant that viewport playback was grossly unreliable for speed estimation and checking.
 - I did not turn on angular velocity for the particles to rotate and that meant that they didn't rotate when I first recorded the video, lol. Thankfully I added an insert to correct that, lol.
 - I don't quite know how to isolate my keyboard sounds from the mix as they have to be in close proximity. I know adding some padding under it reduces bass, but you still get the fairly loud clicking. I may try another keyboard I have to see if it's quieter, lol. Because of the heavy noise, I couldn't really edit my audio the way I usually do to get the best sound... It was my first tutorial with the new mic, so it can only go up from here, lol.

Proposal idea abandoned
I wanted to make a proposal that suggests AVSync be the default, so that Blender's animation speed be consistent, whether you remember to do it or not and that video editors that switch to Blender, are not confused as to why their audio and video never seems to align. The problem is that this is so easily fixed with your default project, that I honestly think it is a waste of time to do so. I may just make a short video about it and those who want it that way, can have it, lol.

If any of you want to make a proposal like that, you are more than welcome to. I think there are too many production arguments against it being a default (such as simulations and particle systems), despite there really only being a case for actual animation work.

New voice over demos
I listened to some of my current demos yesterday and I really think they need to be revamped. My fiction read feels chased and my non-fiction feels like a bit of a snoozefest, so I want to redo the fiction one and the non-fiction one as well as add a few new ones to the mix just to show I really do know what I'm doing - ie demos, lol. Another reason is that I got a new and better mic, so I'm super jazzed about making new demos with it!!!

And that's it!

Biggest thanx to GOD for helping me with this. Without HIM, none of this would be possible! :D
