Marius Oberholster Hey! I'm having an incredible learning experience, not only learning how Blender works (yes, still learning), but also about Open-Source and the incredible software available. Stick around!

Opus Codec

Hey all!

For those of you who don't really go into much detail when it comes to video editing, you have many ways in which you can save a video. Many packaging ways, if you will, that can make the final video smaller in size than other packaging methods. These methods we call codecs. As this is a very competitive market to find the most effective packaging method, there are a lot of politics around their use and patents are involved, and so on and so on. What that means is, that if you use certain packaging methods, or codecs, you have to pay for it's use.

The ogg method (which includes Theora for video and Vorbis for audio) is an open-source, free for all, method that is even competitive with mp3 (Vorbis, not Theora).
Opus is from what their website shows, better performance than Vorbis, AAC, MP3, etc., but as I haven't yet used it, I can't say so, nor do I intend to even suggest it. What I will say though, is that I thoroughly enjoy the benefits of the codec through Skype and considering our connection speed, the quality to size ratio is pretty impressive.
I have downloaded the install for Windows and I have also downloaded an app a friend of mine (the one that also told me about this) says is one of the first to include support for this format called Foobar2000 (beta version only apparently).

So although I can't say yet how well it works, I currently work with Vorbis and Theora and I am very pleased with the size to quality ratio. It is only the lack of support in most editors that get me down.

If you like supporting initiatives like this, give it a shot!

Thank YOU!!!!!!
