Water caustics in BGE

Posted by Marius Oberholster on Friday, June 13, 2014 Under: Quick Blog Tutorial
Hey all!

Yey for another BGE tutorial, I would say, haha.

Today, like the title says, we're talking about caustics in BGE. As you all know, there are some incredible projects for this, and one that particularly stands out, but these, at least for me, has never been an option without scripting, so, I needed to find another way and this is it:

(Focus on the back wall and on the floor)

Doing this is incredibly easy. In the same way that you would add an animated texture to a plane for water, you add that very same texture to a light source. In this case, a sun lamp. Truly, it's that simple. There you go. hahaha.

In this scene, I added some watery elements, like seaweed, very very simple fish, mist and some cubes in the sand. To give that extra punch, I added a variance shadow as well. This allows everything to cast shadows on other objects.

I was before writing this post for you guys, told by GOD that there is a way to really boost this effect, but I was really surprised at how. HE told me to take the Color influence and knock it into the negative values. And I was amazed at the result:

(I made the sun yellow and I luv the color variance to the darker areas being more red)

I really encourage you to give this a try! It really surprised me as to the result and I hope you find it very very useful! :D

Have a brilliant day!! :D

Thank YOU!!!!!!
